The reason why intelligent leftists (i.e. cultural marxists as opposed to reactionary stalinists) oppose the term is just simple optics. Academics were happy to use the term previously. They used it because it made sense, but when the plebs got a hold of it during the Trump election it was time to "debunk" it and rewrite history. Why? Because the term Marxism is explicitly tied in people's minds with the failed communist projects of the 20th century which most people in the west view negatively.

Picrel is an example from a book from 1982 called Philanthropy and Cultural Imperialism: The Foundations at Home and Abroad, published by Indiana University Press, describing Gramsci as a cultural marxist.
