How can I come to fully appreciate literature?

I'm reading 2666 at the moment after not having read much fiction in my life and while I find it enjoyable Bolaño launched into a multipage run-on sentence that likely serves some sort of artistic purpose but I don't what that might be. There are also occasionally complex descriptions of things that don't seem particularly relevant to the story but probably signify some theme that I can't recognize.

What should I do to be able to read supposedly great works of literature not get filtered by them?

I've always thought that boiling down writing to a science is kind of lame.
