Jon's been in too many of Mel's visions to be dead for good.
As far as major characters dying, I'm far more worried that either Jaime or Brienne won't survive the run-in with Catelyn.

The South needed some fleshing out as a region, and Tyrion's chapters served much the same purpose as Brienne's for that. Yeah they plodded a bit, but I felt they were necessary for establishing Place.
I thought the encounter with the Stone Men was pretty effective as well.
He and Jorah need to establish a more interesting dynamic though.

I'm ready for Danys to unite the Dothraki and kick the shit out of the Free Cities.
I'm ready for the Bran chapters to stop mincing around and actually reveal SOMETHING about the when/where/why of the Others.
I'm ready for some Tyrion-Jorah broventures (they can lose Penny, thanks).
I'm ready for Arya, "Stabban 'round the world".
I am ready for smug Cersei to insist on a trial by combat using Frankencregor, the High Septon to pull a certain sparrow-knight gravedigger out of his corner, and hand him a certain shiny blade he found whilst cleaning out the vaults for alms (only been used 3 times!).

My body is ready.
