Now that the dust has settled, who of the two Sayyid Qutb's most nortorious disciples was right, Bin Laden, or al-Suri? Bin Laden believed dragging America into a war in Afghanistan would undo them as it did the USSR. Al-Suri, by contrast, despite being far more ruthless (he advocated extermination of the Shi'ites and said to kill women and children, whereas Bin Laden did not think women and children should targeted even if they might be collateral, and wanted to cultivate good relations with Shi'ites and even non Muslims who weren't aligned with America/Saud/Israel), considered 9/11 a very bad strategy as it compromised the base of operations which he saw as pivotal to first establish before there could be sustained jihad.

>Al-Suri did recognise that the ultimate goal for the Islamic Resistance, as he called this putative global jihadi system, was holding physical territory. His conception of al-Qaeda had three key elements: a physical base (one meaning of Qaeda); a leadership; and a global world-view.[50] The importance of the first cannot be underestimated in al-Suri’s world-view: in fact, the “greatest loss,” from the ensuing US invasion of Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks, “was not the destruction of the terrorist organization but the downfall of the Taliban, which meant that al-Qaeda no longer had a place to train, organize, and recruit.”[51] Al-Suri was categorical on the importance of seizing territory in the ‘Resistance Call,’ which he called the “strategic goal” of the whole enterprise.[52]
