The books revealed my inner chud because I realized very late in the series that the guy I thought was the hero was definitely the villain, and arguably worse than the many demonlike supernatural entities in the world.

And then I read reviews and people seemed to get that he was the villain from the beginning.

I think TSA is enjoyed most when understood not as dead serious lit fic (which the author leans into too strongly sometimes), but as a sick cosmic joke and a quasi-parody of both the fantasy genre and the Abrahamic canon.

There is one though, it came out last year on HBO. Jeffrey Wright was perfectly cast as Achamian, and Skarsgard excelled as Kellhus. I loved the art design of the Nansurian cities. And the old-school live-action puppets rather than CGI for the Inchoroi was awesome.

Okay, fuck it, I'm going to elaborate because I had the same problem with Bakker's series that you did. Couldn't stand Kellhus because of much everyone sucked him off 24/7, but I powered through until book three where it becomes apparent what the author had in mind. Now, it's one of my favorite series, and I meme with the rest of /sffg/. So let me try to convince you.

One of the premises of the series is "Hey, what if we took the cliche superhuman Gary Stu (like Kvothe), who fucks over everyone and is great at everything and gets what he wants and makes everyone love him and is so fucking cool and awesome, and played it completely straight? How the fuck would that work?"

So you get Kellhus. A fucking superhuman Bene Gesserit ubermensch and the first character the book focuses on. We know fuck all about him. He does some weird shit in the beginning, but we don't really have much of a feel for him yet until he does his first bad thing: he abandons the trapper that saved his life to be literally raped to death by not-orcs. Most readers forget about this, but it's the first clue that something isn't exactly human about this guy. He's not the hero. He's the main character, but he is by no means the hero.

>I hate Kellhus! Why does everyone love him so much?! He's such a dick!

You're not alone. The protagonist of the series is arguably Achamian, a tubby beta with very human flaws. He meets Kellhus, falls in love with him, thinks he's super cool, then gradually learns the horrifying truth, as will many other characters in the series.

Anyway, you can stop if you want. I'm just saying that I had the exact problem you did, but I'm glad I picked it back up. Book two can be a slog because it's more like a bridge between the interesting setup of book one and the payoff of book three. But the payoff in book three is nothing compared to the utter insanity of books four to six. Just grimdark balls-to-the-wall crazy shit happening every chapter, leaving you exhausted and spent like the aftermath of a brutal assrape, and the Unholy Consult looks like it's going to be the moneyshot.
