What I think a lot of people fail to understand about a tome of "rules" about writing is that the author occasionally breaking the rules they set out does not invalidate the book as a style guide.

These are general maxims to lean towards when in doubt. If your intention is to write counter to the rules and you understand the consequences of doing so, then you can write whatever it is you want to write.

TLDR; you've got to know the rules before you can break them.
