>typical fantasy with mass testosterone-flinging battles do not interest me

stop reading pulp then?
oh and another recommendation, Way of Kings and everything else by Sanderson, The alloy of law (preferably after reading mistborn) is a very cool book where you get guns mixed with magic systems, but this author writes about great characters in original and interesting worlds, where the magic isn't simply there, is changes social structures, way of living, etc.

The ending blew me away but I think I like Way of Kings more, the magic system in mistborn is very cool but too focused on fighting, as Sanderson himself said.

if he keeps up the quality he'll definitely be up there

I don't know how this guy manages to write books so fast and not have them feel rushed or experience a decrease in quality. Solid plots, great worldbuilding with original magic systems, but most of all believable characters. Especially in Way of Kings I can't state it enough, even the bad guys you should hate.

And what he does is blow my mind every fucking ending of any book, you can clearly see how he's improved since elantris and warbreaker. Not that I don't recommend those as well, but his latest ones are just better in every way.

Overall if someone asks you for good solid fantasy books you can't go wrong with this guy.

Mistborn trilogy is swords and arrows technology level.

The Alloy of Law is set in the same universe a few centuries after the events in the trilogy, and technology took a giant leap forward and they have guns and trains but they keep the same unique magic systems (3 distinct ones)

so you have people with certain power
some that can make bubbles around them and deflect bullets of certain metals
some (using another magic system) can make themselves lighter or heavier and use a gun to send themselves flying up in the air
or some have more than one and can make themselves heavier (so that the forces don't crush them) and then push around themselves and send anything metal and light enough flying

pretty unique religions too
try it

I don't recommend you skip Mistborn though, it's a very good epic fantasy series

Yeah man Alloy of Law is awesome, I'm at chapter 4 of the 6 available online as a preview.
I like it even more than mistborn because of not only the new interesting powers in that universe but the effects on society and religion of what happened at the end of the original trilogy.

The ending of Mistborn will blow your mind.
