Is it necessary to read "War and Peace" to have the intended reading experience for Grossman's "Life and Fate"?

I know that "LnF" references "WnP" but what I don't know is the extent to which those references form the basis of "LnF". Is it just additional flavoring, like a lot of works reference Shakespeare, or is it a key dimension of the work like "The Odyssey" is to "Ulysses"?
