No sentence without words. Yet words alone form no sentence, might as well just produce gibberish. You are right, the too holistic approach would be a too extreme simplification. The "selfish gene", even where trapped in the holistic, will still "try" (as much as we for argument's sake assign a will to it) to escape these confines, only to come to rest in a new equilibrium (or not and fade away).
