Just finished pic related. And as I usually have the habit to check out old threads here of a book after I've read it, I was left slightly disappointed when I stumbled upon some anon's post describing the symbolism and philosophical allusions in the whole meta-plot in regards to how Rick Vigorous actually 'depersonalizes' Lenore as a fictional character in his writings, how the tunnels represent the only place out of his reach where he couldn't affect her life (the place where her great-grandmother hid, her great-grandmother being represented as the antithesis of Lenore), etc. I usually enjoyed the book, despite the obvious Pynchonian presence here, but am I a retard for not outright figuring out those underlying allusion in it?

This book made me cringe so much, I repeatedly banged my head against the wall hoping for the pain to stop.

I tried to get into IJ twice but never got farther than page 100ish.

What do you guys think of this? Halfway in IJ, but I'm just so tempted to pick this one up now.

So is Broom of the System just further evidence of DFW's rampant misogyny? This whole book basically is just build up to Lenore cucking her boyfriend for the living embodiment of Chad.

And is this book really entry level philosophy? The only philosophy I took in school was 101 but a lot of this stuff seems pretty deep.

How much of this is entry level philosophical concepts? I’m not one to know in depth what’s basic stuff or not, reading this and it’s connected to me a lot but I hadn’t ever examined this kind of thing in this kind of depth before so I wouldn’t know how commonplace this is.

i'm one third into this. it's a pretty fun and engaging read although i think there are implications and metaphors i'm missing since i'm not all that familiar with wittgenstein and derrida (i only have a slight awareness of modern linguistics and poststructuralism basics). i'm wondering - what's up with the alphabet chapter tagging?

other than that, what did you think of it? how is it compared to IJ?

Like I get its deconstructive and postmodern themes but like I feel like there's so much I'm missing. Also I get the feeling DFW just read Becker's Denial of Death before writing the passages on Mr Bombardini.

I just read "the broom of the system" and i really liked it. What do you think lenore sen. was doing all the tote down in the tunnels? Did she just fight against her grandson to have a meaning? Did sie Do this to Help lenore jun. In her life?

Can someone tell me wtf this book was about? What is supposed to have happened at the end? The same thing happened with IJ - I felt cheated until somebody explained to me that there actually was an ending and how to find it.
