>Valentine Michael Smith
His philosophical journey spoke to my core when I read it as a teen desperately trying to come to terms with why the world wasn't already made utopic by the people in it. Sophomoric, I know, but I grew up and stopped uselessly crying about it and started trying to understand why I was uncontrollably sympathetic at all
Never thirst, Water Brothers

I think I might be too stupid for sci-fi
Between this and PK Dick I just can't get into proper, actual real sci-fi

>Greatest science fiction novel of the 20th century, let's give it a go!
>Beginning is sort of interesting, I like it
>Becomes more and more bland, sex is often used as a substitute for substance
>Writer has a harem of girls that do his bidding
>Pages upon pages of pointless philosophical drivel about politics and religion

I couldn't finish it. What a meme book.

So, it's just shit, right? Kinda surprised that this is what people were shitting themselves over in the 60s...

I get that it's supposed to be a "satire", but it just feels like a waste of a good premise. Sure, the Martian has a very different view on religion - but then the author just takes a chapter to say "Here's some angels telling you that he's right" instead of providing any rational justification.

Also, the misogyny was just really distracting. At first I thought it was intentionally there to make a point about how different Martian society was without a concept of gender, but there was no payoff.
Actually, that pretty much applies to all the ideas he throws in - the cannibalism/orgies/Jesus scene seem to just be thrown in for controversies sake, rather than because Heinlein actually had anything interesting to say about them.

2/10 what a waste of time. Now tell me why I'm a brainlet who missed everything.

Have been meaning to read more high-level science fiction and horror. How is this in terms of literary merit (prose style, concepts explored, etc.) ?
