Is it possible to write a good novel without being extremely well read and knowledgeable about literary theory? Or good poetry? Would anyone here even know? Or would you only pretend to? Because you're as much of a failure as I am?

I'm at a complete fucking loss when it comes to my future with literature. Just turned 30 and I've read almost nothing. Bits and pieces from across history. I've read maybe 300 books in my life. And I have wasted it dreaming of becoming a writer. I'm planning out a novel and starting to write parts of it and it has such a good premise that I wouldn't even dare share it with this board because it would get stolen. And I can write okay. I even had a story published back in the day. But as I go I keep thinking, how the fuck can I justify doing this? When I've read so little? And almost nothing written in the past decade or two? Like I don't truly understand literature. I vaguely know what postmodernism and shit like that means but I couldn't write an essay about it. And poetry I understand even less, I am disgusted with how little I understand poetry. I can enjoy reading it but couldn't tell you a single fucking thing about what techniques the poet is using. So why the fuck try writing? If I don't get the meta? And too fucking ADHD braindead to learn it with the few years I have left in my shitty unproductive life.

Books like these remind me of a time when reading was my primary source of entertainment. I would be excited, genuinely ecstatic, to come home and read for like six hours straight after school. Hm.
