The Other Side of the Mountain by Michel Bernanos. Really simple and tight narrative, and short too, but it's one of the most beautiful and horrifying stories I've ever read. Think a more surreal, paranoid and pessimistic Algernon Blackwood; lots of fantastic imagery and a mood of disquiet that just keeps building and building until somehow you broach awe. I physically had chills reading it
