Read The Great Transformation by Karl Polanyi. He explains why 19th century liberalism in England was so brutal, and how modern social movements prevent the reforming of a market society. So he essentially provides the historical and theoretical basis for why a disembbed liberal economy is destructive, and how social self-protectionism prevents society from falling back into the perpetually 'positive' outlook of the market society (profits will eventually justify the pauperization of the working class).
