Braudel's A History of Civilization, is okay, although I take issue with a number places.

Durant attempted to write an encyclopedic series, but they mostly focus on the western world and end with Napoleon, when the author died.

Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, is more a beginners science book

It's way too general a subject to be doing the subject any justice, but people attempt it anyway.

Braudel's is pretty good, though I have some issues with it.
/lit/ has often said H.G.Wells The Outline of History is also good

This is a great macro-view of the whole thing.
Starts with the definition of "civilization" and moves geographically to the "cradle of civilization" and it's major historical events, Islam. So not as linear as you might expect.
Get the Wells if you're a big fan, but there's been plenty of other better efforts.
