Book Review: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

Pros
-Epic
-Challenges notions of morality, rationality, and instinct
-Mystifies the human experience
-Memorable characters
-Strong emotional effect
-Educational of French culture
-Cross-country reading (if you are into that sort of thing)
-Descriptive
-Immersive
-Romantic
-Promotes self-reflection
-Extinct (perhaps never existing) gentry behaviors/mannerisms/moralities.
-Bragging rights upon completion
Cons
-Preachy
-Excruciatingly long periods of stagnation
-Unbearable French nuisances (such as a whole chapter dedicated to the use of French slang and another dedicated to a false romanticized description of the Battle of Waterloo)
-There are often clumsy, non-realistic, and forced passages
-Anti-rational
-Pro-instinct/emotions
-Obscenely suggestive scenes (Valjean watched Cosette dress and undress her dolls for hours) (lol pervy French)

Score: 8.2/10

Dear /lit/,
I have been thinking about reading this, but I don't know anything about it. Has anybody here read it and, if so, was it worth it?

If I want to read a really long book, I need to have a good translation. So, can anyone recommend the best translation for Les Miserables?

Just finished this.
Did anyone else find themselves raging at Marius the whole time he was around? Everything that dude did enraged me. I was so upset when Gavroche and Confeyrac died but this punk lived. And then he was indirectly what caused Jean Valjean to die.....RAGE.

Also, how long did it take you guys to get through it? Took me two months and I was trying to get done relatively quickly
