i was atheist from about when i could first start wrapping my mind around such questions, all though high school, college, and grad school--during which time my atheist beliefs were strengthened by reading pharyngula, watching mr. deity, watching youtube videos of dawkins & reading some of his articles, etc., etc.

my mom is atheist agnostic, and my dad is theist but doesn't attend church and seems to lack any sort of fixed set of beliefs, and indeed i notice that he lacks any sort of guiding principles in his own life, instead employing certain beliefs when convenient. so i never had any motivation to become religious due to my upbringing.

that said, i decided to become religious in the christian model of the abrahamic/monotheistic school of belief (not the jewish model b/c the hebrew covenants are a bit shit). this is only because, for reasons quite unknown to me, my life is easier and goes better when i profess belief in, & pray to, God.

(this doesn't sway my "belief in" (if you could call it that--more like, awareness of the facts regarding) evolution by natural selection.)

have any of you fuckers ever read Blindsight by Peter Watts? It's available free online.

All I have to say is HOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT.

If you want inspiration for an original SF story start there. Hard SciFi is where it's going to be at in the 21st century.

Hey /adv/ , i need help with my english homework.

In paragraph form and with references to the poem, discuss the speaker's feelings towards her mother.

I dont expect you to do the paragraph, just a few sentences summing it up for me.

On the farm a willow bridge
though this is Saltspring Island
not Japan. Sometimes it crosses
water, sometimes not. This morning
after rain the ground slides into mud.
My mother and I tread our way
to see the baby llama
in the far pasture. A black Lab lopes up the path, doubles back.
All energy and muscle
and too much love, he bumps our legs.
He belongs here, the family pet.
This morning he has more to do
with time, how it runs ahead and keeps
returning, our smell on its muzzle,
along its back. I'm afraid
he'll knock my mother over.
Suddenly this winter she's unsteady
on her feet. He runs to her
with a stick, strikes her legs
as if he's a monk and shes
a stubborn student, seventy-six
this year. How little time
we have to love each other.
The black dog will not leave
though i shout "No", bang him with my knee
when he jumps up. Our walk becomes a journey, the dog, the winter rains coming on.
My Mother's arm in mine, we turn back.
cross the willow bridge. Now the dog swings round,
gathers everything he is
and flies toward us,
under our feet the water running,
willow branches bending at the sound.

Fellow /lit/erati, I am in a bit of a bind. I've got a persuasive speech due in about 16 hours and I cannot for the life of me get a topic together.
I need something quantifiable that presents a call to action. I tried reading to kids, but the problem is I can find plenty of information /about/ but nothing on /why/ in any school databases.
I started researching this a week ago and I'm still stuck with a whole lot of nothing. The biggest complications in choosing a topic is picking something that will have a specific action to persuade people to do, and also have quantitative evidence that supports it.

Yes, yes, this is a homework thread, but I'm not asking you to do any of it-- that's up to me. I'm just asking for ideas as a way of brainstorming, because the few ideas I've had are shit, incredibly difficult to research, and I'm in panic mode at this point.

I don't know what's going on in this thread right now, but I read some interesting stuff about how, in many ways, the mind acts directly on bodily impulses (they sometimes dictate what you feel and think). Example:
You walk into a room and find a dead person lying on the floor. You feel nauseous and a tightening of the stomach. These are sensations that are induced instinctively in your body as you see the dead thing. But it actually takes the mind longer than the body to realize what you're seeing, so the tight feeling you get in your stomach when you see something like this, is your body's instinctive reaction to the sight (straight from the eyes to the gut). Your mind then reacts to this bodily impulse and "recognizes" what it means, which causes you to get a feeling of disgust and horror.

I am incapable of writing fiction because I feel so little and I always compare myself to masters. And whenever I think I'm doing something good, I feel it suddenly take a turn and become shit. What is wrong with me? Why do I feel so pressured to write a masterpiece?

I'm headed to the Half-Price Books in a couple of hours, /lit, and I'd like some recs to add to my list. Basically just trying to find stuff that I can't get at the library, so I'll give you my list so far as an idea of what I'm looking at reading. Also, if you could recommend one non-fiction book on top of any fiction you suggest, please do so, and tell me why and what it's about.
My list so far:
Journey to the End of the Night by Céline
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
100 Years of Solitude by Marquez
Lowboy by John Wray

Hard mode: Comedy books that aren't Discworld, Confederacy of Dunces, Douglas Adams, etc, I've read all those. Again, a why and/or brief synopsis would be nice.
