Alright, so I like most novels and short stories from Nathaniel Hawthorne, but I can't get too far into this boring piece of shit. Can anybody summarize The Scarlet Letter concisely and maybe help me figure out how to read this whole thing without feeling like an absolute fuckhead who'd rather play PC games?

How come every time a "worst classics" or a "least favorite high school book" thread comes up, The Scarlet Letter is always mentioned and hated on? The Scarlet Letter is easily in the top five of all time for American novels, and Nathaniel Hawthorne is probably the second greatest American author.

Hello /lit/erati, I'm really sorry for doing this but I could use some help and don't have anyone else to turn to.

I have to write a short, 3-page essay on the Scarlet Letter. I have the choice of writing about any specific feature of the novel which intrigued me. The problem is, I can't decide what to write about. I did in fact read the book and enjoyed it very much; I think Hawthorne is a brilliant writer.

Do any of you who have read this book have any good ideas as to what I should write about?
