What created the 'Nice Guy' as we know him today? You know, the women-want-to-date-assholes-and-not-nice-guys-like-me type of person.

I'm sure people like that have existed since the dawn of time, but it doesn't seem like there were very huge numbers of them until just recently. The earliest articles I can find referring to anything like them date back to the late 90s or somesuch. Feminists in the 70s don't talk about them like feminists in the 2000s do. It all seems very local.

So, if you care to think about it, what do you think kickstarted the modern-day 'Nice Guy' phenomenon/obsession?
