Is there a book that gives an overview of the history of philosophy and/or some of the main schools of it that I can read, so I can choose from there to futher research what interests me? I know jack shit about philosophy and it all looks very overwhelming.

I'm planning on writing a story about a MtF transsexual who after getting the first-ever functioning womb transplant, aborts her baby. I'm pretty new to writing so are there any definitive texts I need to read before embarking on this endeavor? Writings on process or how to get works publish would be a big help

great author, read him when I was in my late teens and he did have quite an impression on me. I'm 21 now and not as effected by the content of his writings but I still appreciate him.
For some reason anons never mention "beneath the wheel", which I had to read for high school and enjoyed quite a bit. It's very much like Stoner but set during the angsty teenage phase of a Wunderkind. I actually do think that John Williams and Hesse are quite similar, though I haven't read any other works by the former.

Is Academia really this depressing?

I must have read over 200 books, including the ones shilled on /lit/ constantly (not those shitty ebooks by Mr. F Whateverthefuck).

Ideology is boring. Philosophy, read loads, been there done that. Politics is depressing and history is always political. I can feel myself aging if I read hundreds of pages of fiction.

Video games are a time-sink and I can't afford to be a NEET. Fitness is...worth achieving, to the extent that I already am. Anything more would dip into /fit/ territory, which is disgusting and narcissistic. Sports are kind of cool, I guess, but I'm reaching the age where to pursue any one of them would be a purposeless endeavor.

I only like good art which takes an inordinate amount of skill. I could never live up to this.

Done psychedelics. Life-changing at the time, but I can't get any more use from them.

Tech is cool, but I've already learned and done so much. The only people that want to discuss that shit are disgusting nerds who are impossible to get along with.

Relationships are difficult and I am clearly difficult to satisfy.

Suicide is for quitters. Self-destructive binges into alcoholism never turn out well.

Now that Trump is out, even imageboards are fucking boring. There is a growing void as I desperately search out for new avenues. They are quickly fading away.

Wat do, /lit/? Any hobby/book/genre/etc suggestions?

I think Thomas Eakins' "The Thinker" has become synonymous with William Stoner to most of this board. It's an excellent choice for the cover, and absolutely contributed to my mental image of Stoner.
