Does /lit/ fuck with Thomas Ligotti?
I've just properly got into him, and I fucking love it, despite the fact that I do not buy into pessimist philosophy. Started with the Teatro, currently making my way through the penguin classics edition of SOADD/Grimescribe and then I've got Conspiracy waiting for me.
Let's discuss. Very open to recommendations to similar writers. I definitely see similarities to Kafka and Poe, but I have not yet read Lovecraft so that comparison is lost on me.

>Someone of talent needs to nut up and spew good purple prose all over the contemporary horror scene (unless there already is, I don't read a ton of contemp horror).

There is.

>b-but he's a big meanie antinatalist :((((

Good horror doesn't care if your feelings are hurt, pleb.

Do you think Weird Fiction, or Horror has a particular philosophical bent? I feel like the ghost story, in particular, is always rather moral/emancipatory, telling the story of victims returning to haunt their victimizers - maybe even related to that whole idea of "hauntology", but I confess to not fully understanding that one.

Thomas Ligotti is as literary as modern horror gets. He has everything you're looking for; good prose, unique insight, and ingenius construction. Start with Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe.

>One gasps to hear scientists swooning over the universe or any part thereof like schoolgirls overheated by their first crush. (Albert Einstein, Karl Popper, Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, many others.) From the studies of Krafft-Ebbing onward, we know that it is possible to become excited about anything - from shins to shoes. But it would be nice if just one of these gushing eggheads would step back and, as a concession to objectivity, speak the truth: THERE IS NOTHING INATELY IMPRESSIVE ABOUT THE UNIVERSE OR ANYTHING IN IT

Thomas Ligotti is like Lovecraft and Kafka thrown into a blender. I would recommend starting off with Songs of a Dead Dreamer & Grimscribe. >>12652496 is good but it's a bit much for someone who's new to Ligotti. Check out a few of his short-story collections before you dive into The Conspiracy Against the Human Race.

Read Thomas Ligotti. On a slightly related note, I find it hilarious that King has criticized Lovecraft's prose. There's no denying Lovecraft could be purple and wasn't very good at dialogue but those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. King may not have Lovecraft's purpleness but he has written tons of dialogue that's clunkier than anything Lovecraft wrote.

What are some good "alternative" horror books. Things more focused on being eerie and weird than usual Stephen King / Dean Koontz schlock.

Pic related. Aickman and some Blackwood (The Willows specially) related too.
