Yeah most of military sci-fi is pretty shitty, with regards both to the quality of writing and the themes used.
The plucky underdog in the 18th century Space Navy not being allowed to show just how brilliant he is by his incompetent and/or corrupt superiors is a pretty annoying one (the space marines being the close second).
Fuck we have a bona fide Space Force created by no other than God-Emperor Trump and it already has no (and does not want to have) any kind of connection to the Navy whether it's organizational or cultural.
