Any way we could fit American Psycho into this discussion?

Upon reading it, I couldn't help but compare it to BNW, 1984, We, Brazil (film), etc.. It just had all of the satirical elements that the previous examples had, and it made a statement in the same playing field.

Personally, as far as relevance to the present day goes, their importance is gradually waning. We live in a well-informed and intellectual age. After all - we have discussions like these, we can recognize the glaring, thick flaws in our current system, and our relationship to this system. It's this objectivity and self-awareness that buffer against the (admittedly present) threats that Orwell and Huxley warned us against.

Going back to American Psycho: I feel that it's a superior work to the "classics". The authors of the past used the troubles of their time to paint a speculative picture of where humanity was headed. Ellis, instead, captured a snapshot in time and magnified it, giving us a case-study of a specific moment in a specific age.

Although, now that I think about it, the same could easily be said for Clockwork Orange as well...
