I'd be very happy if you got into these books. They're great
Indeed all protagonists of these books are non-human (as mentioned at one point in Bluebear, following a historic incident humans are in fact banished from the entire continent of Zamonia): Rumo is of a species of tall humanoid dogs with deer horns characterized by excelling at physical combat, while Hildegard Mythmaker, the protagonist and fictional author of the City of Dreaming Books comes from a species of long-lived dinosaurs that dwell in a castle-mountain and write literature of all kinds (pic related, that's him)
Captain Bluebear is actually somewhat of a household name in Germany, as Moers first devised him as a character in children's television, who tells wild stories of his seafaring days to his grandchildren. With the 13 1/2 Lives Moers sort of reclaimed the character for himself and gave him an entirely different angle and a rich backstory. About the only connection is in the books foreword, which calls to mind the opening image of the cartoons with his ship sitting on top of a tall cliff when he writes:
People often ask me what it was like in the old days. My answer: In the old days there was a lot more of everything. Yes, there used to be mysterious islands, kingdoms and whole continents that no longer exist. They lie beneath the waves of the eternal ocean, for the waters are slowly but inexorably rising higher and higher, and one day our planet will be entirely submerged. That is why I now live in a seaworthy ship perched on a cliff high above sea level.

What are some good non-english fantasy that always misses the radar and people don't talk much about it, be it in discussions or charts? I just found out about Walter Moers today and I'm sure there's even more good stuff hiding behind the language barrier.
