As long as you are not the automaton that's hard to prove. The whole world could be an illusion and there is just one observer modeling us. The question would be if the rules apply to the lower level reality, then yes, the automaton could have consciousness. If not, we could model neural networks for eternity and have nothing but better and better image processing.

The other two from the trilogy are Sweet Thursday and Tortilla Flat, if you liked Cannery row you should read them. First one is a sequel, the latter is loosely related. Plus there's the "Log from the Sea of Cortez" but that's not a novel, it's based on the logbook of a scientific expedition Doc made.

Personally I chose Atticus Finch from "To Kill a Mockingbird" as he is the perfect gentlemen. Can anyone compete with Atticus?
