B.R Meyers is a dude, anon. And he's very right, not exactly in the specifics of his criticism - which are not wholly the point - but in his description of the masturbatory, meaningless echo chamber that is all things 'literary' today. The point is not that Don Delilo or Paul Auster churns out hack shit - it's the nonsensical pretension of the 'critics' responding to them that is Meyer's real target

Make it cost something. Usual go-to ideas for that are 'magic costs you your soul/life/blood', but you could go for something darker, like let's say you have to chop off a finger every time you feel like nuking a town, or it takes away your memories to summon fireballs. Something like that.
