Ultimately, each person is faced with the question that faced the Israelites in the desert: Given the seeming of abundance of evidence to the contrary, can I believe and trust that God is actually good. This belief and trust ultimately comes down to faith, which in turn rests on the help of God's grace.

You might also consider reading a very short but profound book: Abandonment to Divine Providence by Caussade, which does not address the question head-on but does address it, perhaps even more effectively, by addressing it indirectly, en passim.
