I'm part of my university's book club and I've had similar experiences

We've been assigned The Book Thief as the book we're reading, and that's a typical choice for the club. Nothing but YA lit, every time. The most "literary" book we've read is Dorian Grey, before that we read Peter Pan and The Graveyard Book.

I want a serious club that reads books that aren't written for 15 year olds, but every time I suggest something, it doesn't get any votes and the cycle continues.
