Just read this, unironically. Bertrand Russell does a pretty good survey of what philosophers actually said. You can supplement this with articles from plato.stanford.edu

Anyone who disagrees with this is a troll or a philosophy major huffing huge amounts of copium

How valuable is pic related? If I read this and then Wittgenstein will I understand the whole of philosophy?

Hey /lit/ I'm looking for a good book/books that discuss the history of philosophy. I've been thinking about pic related but I've heard from some of you guys that it's not that great and that when it comes to the philosophies of Russels contemporaries that he is unfair in his examination of them. Is it still worth the read or are there better books on the subject?

I've read through Plato and Aristotle and although I want to study more philosophy there's no way I'm going to get through all of the original material in my lifetime. Is pic related decent? If not, can you recommend an alternative? I'm thinking of reading this and then checking out original material of philosophers that seem particularly interesting as I go along.
My main interest is literature, not trying to be a philosopher, just want to have a solid background to help articulate how I think about things.

Is this a good overview of western philosophy? I'm looking to read an overview text before starting with the greeks

It's becoming increasingly apparent to me that everything I read is in some way informed by or references one or an amalgamation of many major philosophical ideas. For this reason, I'm looking for a good primer of all major philosophers and their ideas.

I don't plan on getting deep into philosophy so please refrain from telling me I should "start with the greeks" as it would be a waste of energy. I'm simply looking for a good summary of all major/worthwhile works so that I can pick up on references that the works of fiction I read make.

Is pic related a good fit?

Is this book a good introduction for western philosophy?

Is this book any good? I see it being very criticized for being biased and inaccurate. I bought it today and I am not sure whether I should start reading it or exchange it for a different/better choice (if that's the case, can you please recommend a better one). I have very basic knowledge of philosophy, so I would like to start with something like this for an overview before, and if, I dig deeper.

Thanks.

If you ever want to read for pleasure disregard 80% of the recommendations on /lit/. Pic is related if you want to read a general overview of philosophy that has its problems but is easy to get through.

That's not even the best intro written by Russel. Pic related is better, but still not the ideal place to start.

Get a textbook written by a historian of philosophy (or, better still, several historians of philosophy). Actual philosophers tend to sneak (or in Russel's case, ham-fistedly shoehorn) judgements of other philosophers into their history texts. Historians of philosophy tend to be less biased, although they'll still have favorites.

Is this book good? I'm reading it right now, I'm on page 75. I don't mean "is it pleasing", I mean is it still respected as a source of history?

>A/The History of Western Philosophy

Could be pretty interesting if I get to travel throughout the various time periods discussed; if I'm stuck in Ancient Greece - fuck that.

Also first post ever on /lit/.
