Where does the person who knows nothing about poetry start? Who should be read? My preference is likely 20th century works

hello /lit/
I'm supposed to write an essay on Walt Whitman's 'Song of Myself' - sections 1-8.
It's supposed to be analytic and argumentative, with secondary sources, MLA format - all that uni crap.
But the problem is, although I dig the poem, and it speaks to me, I have no clue how to do this - it seems irrelevant to me to write 'scientifically' about art.
Any of you anons got any ideas what should I write about? Themes, approach, viewpoints?
I will probably fail the semester if I don't manage to complete this assignment.

I must make the time to listen to the poets
They speak to me in patience
In celebrations that do not
Wait but stand forever in
weathering stones.

The caffeine exultation would have me stand a night in clothes of poverty.
I know too much in these inspirations
and have not sat but to wax a string into candles
which I could then waste at midnight
sick with my waiting and my light.

I like how it's perfectly normal for teenaged boys and girls to have crushes on each other and "go out" and all that, but if a boy has a crush on another boy at that age (or if two boys are "going out") it's somehow viewed as some kind of proto-perversion.

I love how whenever a straight couple walks around holding hands, that's fine, but the second a gay couple walks around holding hands everyone starts acting self-righteous about how you just don't have to flaunt your sexuality all the time.

Hey /lit/ I have to do some summer reading so I was wondering if you could recommend me two good books that I could read. Any reading difficulty is fine, not absurdly long, any genre is fine besides sci-fi

Have you your pistols? have you your sharp-edged axes?
