Just finished reading Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. Good read. Everything was fine until I got to chapters 4 & 5. It was downhill from there. I understood virtually nothing Dedalus said regarding art and beauty. I wouldn't have gotten the meaning behind his philosophy if it wasn't for some very helpful notes I found online.

This book for just too hard for a beginner like me. Would someone recommend me some entry-level books? I've read works such as Catcher in the Rye, Great Gatsby, A Farewell to Arms, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Enjoyed them all.

Contemplating reading Great Expectations but I doubt I'm ready for it.

Anytime I read Ulysses, I feel closer to God.

I agree with everything D&E'S said in this thread. He's almost definitely better educated that everyone else in the thread, and has a deeper love of literature than all you neckbeard fantasy douchebags.

I agree, I only read good books, and fantasy is a flaccid belch of a genre sustained by people who can't think for themselves.

No, it'll be fine. I've read big sprawling books before, just never really delved into Pynchon. I know the short story is not really anything like his novels, but it just sparked an interest, or rather, reminded me that I needed to read him.
