Depends on how much you already know about the setting OP. If you have no idea then I wouldn't recommed starting with Horus Heresy, which are actually 30K books and not 40K. Some of the charm in reading those comes from the differences from the established 40K setting. Ciaphas Cain, Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts are all good series to start with, but be warned that none of these three are primarily about Space Marines. For that you might check Space Wolves, Dark Imperium, Ultramarines... But if I were you I'd pick Ciaphas Cain, consult the Lexicanum when some aspect of the lore confuses you, and dive into the Horus Heresy afterwards. Bonus - if you are into video games Dawn of War is a great game that also introduces you to many of the things going on and you get lots of Space Marine action

>oh no how dare people ask questions on where to start with a relatively popular setting with lots of semi-related novels... on a LITERATURE board
Too bad about that /pol/ thread that died for this discussion about actual BOOKS right you fucking retard

Sure, but that's part of what makes W40K fun. You're favourite stories taken into a dystopian future and scaled up to... 40000

What is the healthy reading ratio of pulp like 40K vs. more high-brow (unironically) books, do you think? Reading this stuff can get addictive because it's mindless, effortless fun (like potato chips or video games, really), but on the other hand you just know spending all your precious time on sci-fi/fantasy is likely a waste. Not to mention W40K, specifically, hits directly on your consumerist vein with all the serialised books and cool flashy covers. I made a habit of reading lightweight novels like these before sleeping as I rarely have the energy to read anything more demanding, but sometimes I feel like I'm diving too deep into the rabbit hole here

He's still an asshole, it's more that I pigeonholed myself into wanting him to go back and avenge that specific cult, but that obviously requires some sort of stake and care for it, even if it's entirely ego driven
The easiest way for that in my mind is a pre-cult life that contrasts it. Since he's not old enough to make it a business/power venture, it kind of boils down to a) cult is a 'good' thing (religious order, he was groomed into it, it's an extended family, etc) or b) cult isn't socially accepted and he chose it (regardless of his exact intentions)
I went with the latter for more agency but naturally it means I'll have to show or tell the context of joining. Most most revenge stories stick with telling to hype up the next target ('He was an asshole leader who beat me repeatedly') so I figured why not do the opposite - show all the targets and their interactions with the MC to drive up the personal element.
The result, as you can tell, is essentially Monte Cristo and a fall of grace - or at least, fall out of favor if I push aside social hierarchy bullshit
