It varies from place to place. Some parishes have strong communities, in others the community is non-existent. Total luck of the draw, there's no reliable way to find one that does have a strong community. Trad communities seem to be better in this regard, though they come with their own set of caveats.

If you want to learn more about the faith, particularly the way you're supposed to live, and participate in the mass, the catechism is usually recommended but it's extremely dry and unintuitive, so I wouldn't recommend it; but it is the comprehensive and definitive guide to living as a catholic, and what you should go to if you want the church mandated rules.

Otherwise, what's best is to read literature written by the saints and other important figures in the church. But really, there's nothing that beats the bible, and you must always remember that. The point of the Christian faith is to live rightly, but you shouldn't become obsessed with avoiding sin because that is not focusing on the most important aspects of the faith, which is pursuing truth, goodness, treating others rightly, etc. i.e pursuing God himself. People droning on about sin and becoming obsessed with eliminating or controlling it have unironically missed the point and you should avoid them whenever possible.

I've heard that the concept for the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout was inspired by A Canticle for Leibowitz. Is it worth reading if I like Fallout? I find the concept of the Brotherhood really cool and I want to experience more of it.

He's right in the same way that you could say the same things about the relationship between the Bible and the Catholic Church and be right too.

Religious texts are marvels of art, culture, the human spirit, and possibly God. The people and institutions who arise to disseminate them usually suck so hard it is absolutely unbelievable. They butcher the texts and suffocate all meaning so they can skin it and wear a crude facsimile of truth.

So, he's right in the sense that the execution of Judaism is flawed, because it most certainly is. I think the book, however, will hold up forever.

Hilaire Belloc was a buddy of Chesterton's and wrote extensively. Also pic related is my one of my personal favourites in general, a brilliant condensation of the faith.

I asked in the last thread and I will ask again. Any books that are similar to Fallout series?
Pic related inspired Fallout 1.

Another one. This is probably the only one book where I ever felt some sympathy for the catholic church.

A Canticle for Leibowitz, same as >>20165697, though I don't find it ever being particularly "fantasy". It's about the workings of a Catholic Monastery over a thousand or so years following a nuclear holocaust. The growth of society and the treatment of scripture (old and new) within the abbey mirrors that of the actual rise of Christianity in Europe. The writing is fantastic, and the Miller clearly knows his history well. Despite being a Catholic himself, he has no qualms about really showing the way in which religion and scripture change over time.

Excellent story, Chiang is one of the best scifi writers today. Story of Your Life gets a little ridiculous towards the end imo, but I can never complain too much about scifi that explores the nature of language and communication. There's nowhere near enough.

>>20164386
Good pick, probably my number two. I wish the ending was a little stronger, but the world it creates is just so excellent. After watching the movie and playing the games that were so loosely based off of it, I never expected the book to be my favorite part of the "franchise".
