He would have gone far, but a main point of the novel is that FY exploits the people who try to use him as a pawn. It would have been much harder to become a venerable on his own if he did not have access to all the inheritances (GSIV, RLDV, THDV, Dream Path, Lang-ya, etc), but of course, he would also be free of Heavenly Court's pursuit and the machinations of the revived Venerables. Heavenly Court considers FY a threat because of his personality, and fear him not because of SAC, but because of his potential for growth if left unhindered.

FY is not the most talented, but he is the most determined ( Perseverance Gu comes to mind), and it is his ability to maximize benefits under any circumstances that makes him special.
