Excluding Russia, why is there so little notable literature from Eastern Europe?

Is there anything wrong with cultural elitism?

Time is limited, so we should read and listen to and watch only the best that art gives us. What's wrong with that?

Hey /lit/,

I've never posted here and am not too familiar with the board culture. Hopefully you lot are accommodating of newcomers and willing to give suggestions.

I used to read a lot when I was younger but haven't had the chance to in recent years. I travel a lot, am still in university, and manage a small business as well as my own. However, the economy of my industry has slowed down considerably in recent months and I've found myself with much more time on my hands than I'm used to having. I'm trying to get back into books so I can keep my mind sharp in addition to rediscovering the only past-time that kept me sane growing up.

Right now I'm reading "Shantaram." I'm not sure how I feel about some of the plot elements or the author's writing style, but I like the book overall and am disappointed that I'm already halfway done.

What are some similar and good books? I'm white but I lived in India for two years, so it'd be nice to read something else about Delhi or Mumbai or anywhere else in the country. International settings and fiction or historical fiction are preferred.

Sorry in advance if these kinds of threads aren't appreciated on /lit/. The only other slow board I use is /trv/, and people are usually friendly and helpful with these kinds of requests, provided OP isn't an autist and seems like he or she will follow through with what they're planning (in this case, to buy a book).

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3066043/A-new-title-transgender-people-join-Mr-Mrs-Miss-used-driving-licences-bank-details-government-departments.html

>A new gender neutral title 'Mx' is to join the honorifics 'Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms' on driving licences and other official documents, the first change to officially recognised titles in decades. Royal Mail, high street banks, government departments and some universities all now accept Mx which is used by transgender people or other individuals who do not identify with a particular gender. The title has been added, without fanfare, to official forms and databases and is under consideration by the Oxford English Dictionary for inclusion in its next edition.

What does /lit/ think of this new evolution in the realm of linguistics? Will you acknowledge this new title?
