“Life's splendor forever lies in wait about each one of us in all its fullness, but veiled from view, deep down, invisible, far off. It is there, though, not hostile, not reluctant, not deaf. If you summon it by the right word, by its right name, it will come.”

Hopefully a bilingual anon can help me out. I have both english and spanish versions of Kafka's The Trial but I'm not sure which one would be a more "accurate" translation for a first time read. I'm a native spanish speaker, but I have absolutely no problem with english lit (I've read a lot more books in english than spanish) would I be right to assume english has a lot more affinity to german than spanish? Or should I just read it in my mother tongue? I guess this question applies to all literature written in german, for future reference

Has anyone ever had as interesting an interpretation of any of Kafka's works as he did of Don Quixote?

Without making any boast of it Sancho Panza succeeded in the course of years, by feeding him a great number of romances of chivalry and adventure in the evening and night hours, in so diverting from himself his demon, whom he later called Don Quixote, that this demon thereupon set out, uninhibited, on the maddest exploits, which, however, for the lack of a preordained object, which should have been Sancho Panza himself, harmed nobody. A free man, Sancho Panza philosophically followed Don Quixote on his crusades, perhaps out of a sense of responsibility, and had of them a great and edifying entertainment to the end of his days.

Let's do something constructive for once and come up with the weirdest interpretations we can for Kafka's works. I think Josef K. was very clearly guilty, for example, and can elaborate if anyone cares about this thread.

Which author do you relate to the most?

I relate most to Kafka, esp. his dysfunctional sexuality and his permanent, crippling sense of inferiority to his father.

How about you? Which author do you most relate with, and why?

Is it right for us to observe a piece of art even if the artist actively attempted to keep us from viewing it?

/lit/, I just read The Judgement by Kafka, and I really don't know what the hell just happened. Like... I'm really not even sure where to begin my inquiry to you. I feel like I hardly even knew the character when suddenly the story ended. Can anyone offer some sort of explanation for this?
