There are people like Azov Battalion on the Russian side too, particularly in the Donbas militias. If you're comparing leaders it's between Putin and Zelensky, and it's obvious why conservatives and nationalists would side with Putin. One guy was dancing in a gay BDSM outfit on TV and telling cossacks to be gay (i.e. erase your culture and embrace globohomo), while arresting nationalists who protested pride parades. The other guy made gay propaganda illegal, built pic related in the last few years, and has pivoted to nationalism according to this Russian writer:
