Read (or watch) Greek tragedy. What you're looking for is an education in how to survive and thrive in the agon (struggle) of life. The Greeks at their best educated eachother in theatre (which itself was a site of agon/struggle between rival choirs and playwrights for prizes i.e. philonikia), the mystical and magic-spell side was always an escapist cope for people who lost in the agon and therefore appealed to the gods or a heavenly realm as subsitute for real world arete (excellence).
