I suppose so; it has a fairly straightforward plot but is delivered in a nonlinear and challenging manner. Hawkes was incredible but is hard to recommend because all his books feel like literal nightmares: psychedelic, dark, and extremely specific.
I think SS is his best because it does all that, in his typically stylish prose, and also manages to have strong characters and emotional satisfaction, which he doesn't always achieve.

I'm halfway through TWWTW and his style is very pleasing.
He's a decent pick, but for me, the best American writer of the 1900s has gotta be this weirdo.
