They weren't yet completely succumbed to materialist mechanical scientism - or actually recoiled against it - and mused on the vastness and profundity of life and life's relation to man. They were sensitive to the beauty of nature and attempted to capture as much of it at once in art. For beauty's sake, to evoke awe in oneself. Course not all of it was this pure poetic outpouring of inspiration but we definitely lost something since that time period. Wonder, perhaps.
