Well many philosophers have insisted on the switch from essence (Husserl's phenomenology) to existence (Heidegger's phenomenology), but I'd like to know if Heidegger succeeded in his project or if those that continued this line of thought did better in talking about Being than Heidegger did.

it's about modernism, which is the hermeneutics of skepticism, i.e. the problem of other minds in relation to how we understand ourselves as self-contained inner ego/subjects.

descartes is usually the go to for skepticism: how can i really know anything more than myself? descartes gives up the reality of his body and world in order to get certainty.

othello wants to possess desdemona's self-knowledge. but the problem of other minds is that that you can never truly get inside someone's head: you can possess them. so how can we be sure we know one another? othello is a modernist and like what descartes does to his body, othello smothers his love (life).

>science is the best method for determining truth.

>lel
that's based on a correspondence theory of truth. which is laughable.

truth has to do with unconcealment. science is a way of unconcealing things, but it's not the only way. plus, the power of science has nothing to do with being able to say "what" something is, but rather "how", which allows for science to be predictive. the power of science is that it is one method of prophecy, as you said:
>what will happen...

but when you and everyone argues right now, you aren't doing science. you're doing rhetoric. if science brings you objective truth, how are you being objective when arguing, since, it's certainly not science?

Trying to into Being and Time now.
It gets easier and easier the more familiar you get with the terminology.
After the few first chapters the new additions that Heidegger keeps laying onto it seem increasingly intuitive, which everyone always says when someone mentions Heidegger, but up until now I thought it was just a tired cliché, and that everyone was just acting like a wise-ass, which is sometimes the case, but I guess one doesn't exclude the other, huh.

People said I should've started with some of his earlier works, like What is Metaphysics, but I found it better to read a biography on him and his works.

And ripped off gets thrown around a lot, both around Heidegger and Derrida, but I think that phrase carries with it some pretty extreme connotations, as in they didn't do ANYTHING, which I just don't think to be true. Fuck if I know anything about Stiegler, but reading just a tiny bit about him as I'm writing this, I think I'll definitely look into him.

it took Wittgenstein's entire life to finally work to where Heidegger was in his 20s. Heidegger saw that you didn't need to do it with math/logic, but language was fine. Heidegger was able to end up doing much MUCH more for us.

have you ever existed without being in the world?
have you ever experienced the world without existing as a being?

we are our world existingly. we are the location of the unfolding of being.

>in any way
In a way he did. He did feel that German and Greek were qualified on a whole other level for handling the ontological problems of modernity, and that that a purge of German, removing all Latin influences, was needed.
"Yes….I am thinking of the special inner affinity of the
German language with the language of the Greeks and with
their thinking. This has been confirmed to me again and
again by the French. When they begin to think they speak
German. They insist that they could not get through with
their own language." - Martin Heidegger, Charles Bambach, Heidegger’s Roots, p. 202.
He did sense a large shift in the essence of time, truth, and being with the "Romanization" of the languages.
So successor isn't really that far off.

Nabokov was a lepidopterist. He also was brilliant and ended up over-thinking everything.

He was paranoid that he would be psychoanalyzed and that it would be *implied* his love for butterflies was actually sublimated pedophilia. So, to mess with these bedbug psychoanalysts (remember how Humbert mentions he makes up stories to tell psychoanalysts in the beginning of Lolita?), Nabokov wrote a book about pedophilia, which in actuality is about his sublimated love for catching butterflies.

tl;dr it's a metaphor for preying on weak innocent little beautiful butterflies.

Haha. Oh wow. You can't be serious. It's only of, of not THE, crowning achievements of Continental philosophy.

>I think you should read it just for entertainment
That's the exact opposite of how it should be read. Christ. His meditations on Sein-zum-Tod are chilling and deeply haunting.

>Don't expect your life to change after reading it.
Your life will be changed if you actually read it seriously.
