If you write to convey big picture messages about the human condition then of course you're gonna repeat things the Greeks said thousands of years ago.
But if you frame those ideas within contemporary issues that only people living in our times have faced (death of white imperialism, sexual liberation, the motherfucking internet) then originality is definitely possible.

Hey, /lit/.

I want to start writing a new short story but I'm not sure of a few things. I have a catastrophic event in a characters life. I can either tell it in third person and risk losing the expression of some of the characters emotions, or I can write it in first person, but I'm not sure how to start it without going into clumsy flashback mode.

What do you think?
