1) because you don't need to actually read anything but a few short anecdotes to become a master of diogenes.
2) his "philosophy" plays into all of the biggest themes of western society: primitivism, individualism, emancipation; sticking it to the big man, being dignified in not working, being smug with no real system of beliefs, while dunking on everyone and being the center of universe.

he's one of the only "philosophers" that you don't have to learn ANYTHING to understand, which only takes about 2 minutes of reading fake anecdotes tuned over 500 years to be compelling.
