Yes, I see we were attacking the problem from different ends. For understanding the Greeks Thucydides is absolutely essential. For a focus on purely literature, however, he is less so. I grant that Herodotus has perhaps more value than I initially made out, but I maintain for a literature-centric approach his work can be merely supplementary.

I'm a Catholic so I only really focused on Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Pascal and the like. For a serious student of philosophy you should have a broader scope. Pic related might be of some interest. I've heard conflicted accounts of the value of Russell's History of Western Philosophy, but I have a copy sitting on my shelf and it seems reasonably comprehensive for the amateur. At the very least it could point to further reading.
