Unfortunately, I cant recommend anything else in the genre. I tried a couple series after being swept up in ASoIaF and they all fell flat.

Martin truly is Fantasy for people who hate Fantasy. Because nothing else in the genre is good.

Seriously though...wow, I'm surprised at this. I mean, I'm not surprised that some of the big names in new wave SF are critiquing older works, but this is just too much. Bashing Tolkien like that...It's really sad. Tolkien was a great writer and most importantly, the greatest world builder ever. How can you just say something like that? I mean, not even to Tolkien...to ANY writer, you just don't do that...rude motherfuckers.
