Popular culture has never really been widely enthralled with people who we consider literary masters. I mean, for most of the millennium, the vast majority of people couldn't even read. Any of the greats of the 19th 20th century, unless they had some crossover appeal (like Tolstoy and his self-help movement, or Kerouac/Vonnegut with young adult fiction), were pretty obscure except in literary circles like academia and the upper class.

A lot of people (at least in America), do not want to have to work in order to gain excitement or pleasure. Kant is a difficult read for most well-read people, so he's basically impenetrable for the majority of the populace. That's okay. Whatever. Doesn't indicate a decline of intelligence or whatever. It's just a shifting paradigm.
