Equally, you didn't have to grow up in Middlesborough or Nottingham. I grew up in Sheffield, and believe me, Glasgow seemed like a relief after getting away from my home town, where a good night is usually a couple of litres of cider, some pills, then joyriding until bored, then burning out the car, then collapsing until it was time to do the whole thing again tomorrow.

Everybody's personal hell seems the worst, I guess. All urban nightmares are unique in their own way. I'm not pretending Glasgow is paradise, or that neds are harmless, but every large UK city has similar cultures (in Sheffield, they're called "budgies" because of that shellsuit-bottoms-tucked-into-socks look that's just so sexy and cool).
