It's a must read. It's right in that sweet spot between hard science fiction and pop fiction. The writer actually made corrections to the design of the ring in the second book, after some readers made calculations and showed him some flaws. A worthy book by all means. The sequels get progressively worse.

Not really. The only books I have liked are the Earthsea series which are fantasy. I have heard good words about the Hainish Cycle, but never got around to read it.
