Jung had many disagreements with Freud but he certainly didn't see him as a schizo. Freud was a trailblazer and a skilled essayist; you should read his important works based off that alone. As far as Jungian psychology is concerned, if you're looking for prerequisites you should read the Bible, Nietzsche, a bit of Kant, and Schopenhauer at the very least.

First familiarize yourself with Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzche, the Bible, ancient Greek myths, and Freud. Some people will say it's unnessesary to read all of those, but you won't be able to appreciate and understand the ideas Jung is working with or the problems he is trying to solve if you don't lay the philosophical groundwork. Once you've read all of them read Jung's section in Man and His Symbols.

Jung once said that "Life beings at 40." Do you agree with this? Our culture puts great emphasis on youth and sees most old people as baggage to be carried by the nation's youth. Can any oldfags give some input as to whether or not they have had greater spiritual awareness as they grew older?

How do people individuate according to Jung?

OP depending on how deep you wanna dive into Jung I would suggest familiarizing yourself with Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, the Bible, and the Greek myths and philosophers (Plato and Heraclitus in particular). Jung draws on these works frequently. If you just want a basic understanding of analytic psychology then all this supplementary reading isn't necessary, but if you wanna go DEEP then go for it.

Your story is very similar to mine. Jung is one of the few authors I've read that has had a real, lasting effect on how I see the world. I'm glad you have gotten something useful from him as well.

Jung exists in a grey zone between philosophy and science. He works with a lot of philosophical ideas, particularly those of Kant, Nietzsche, and the Greeks. Despite this he always emphasized that he was not a metaphysician--that he was an empirical medical professional whose primary concern was the psyche. He was also very much a pragmatist, meaning that he judged the validity of his theories by how well they helped his patients. Could Jung prove that his method of dream analysis is 100% correct? No, it is pretty much impossible to measure the meaning of a dream since it is a totally subjective experience. Can Jung measure whether or not his method of analysis is effective in treating neuroses? Certainly. In one of his books he writes, "reality is that which is useful". I think Jung is an important and challenging thinker--his writings have helped me immensely in learning how to introspect and relate to myself. I would say give Modern Man in Search of a Soul a read, or watch some videos online to get a feel for what he's about, then decide after that whether or not you think he's worth diving into.
