What are some /lit/ approved horror books? No reddit slop like Stephen King

How do I write a somewhat "edgy" horror book like American Psycho without coming off as too edgy or try-hard? I want to write a horror book that's "extreme" but I don't want it to seem like some edgy teenager wrote it. How do I make it actually interesting? I also want it to retain some sort of artistic value and not be some Stephen King-esque shlock.

I'm not a psychologist but my intuition is this: feeling like you are more mature or more intelligent than your peers is not uncommon at all. On some level I suspect many people feel this way. So the question you should then ask is why do you feel the need to identify with the wise old man?

You said in your other post that you identify with the wise man's celibacy and love of wisdom. Well the flip side of these characteristics would be lack of intimacy and coldness towards people. Someone who is celibate also isn't experiencing the spiritual/emotional connection of sex, and someone who loves wisdom can often find himself loving wisdom more than he loves people. You may want to consider that you identify with this archetype not because of his positive characteristics, but because of his negative ones. Again, I don't know you personally but I would say that you may be emotinally stunted in some way and you are coping with it by telling yourself "I'm not bad at intimacy and sexual expression, I'm just too wise and mature to need such things." I hope this is pointing you in the right direction. Take your time and keep your chin up, friend.

Where do I start with vampire literature, exactly? Was Dracula, 1897, by Bram Stoker really the first of this sub-genre of horror, or were vampires written about as a subject before then? What is the original text of vampire literature? Did it originate from spoken storytelling or poetry before getting written? What are more recent vampire novels that you have found interesting?

I'm down for a /horror/ general, at least in October when I will be reading horror things. There probably aren't enough general horror readers on here to sustain it year round though.

October is fast approaching. I'm planning on reading mostly dark and comfy novels that month in the spirit of Halloween. Mostly gothic fiction, I think. Anyone else doing something like this? Any recommendations for comfy/dark gothic stuff aside from the obvious ones like Frankenstein which I've already read a few times and love and Dracula which I don't much care for?
